November 25, 2008 Dear Raffle Ticket holder and potential purchasers, RE: 2009 BMW RAFFLE
We are sorry to tell you that the raffle for the 2009 BMW to benefit Fund for an OPEN Society has been cancelled.
Although tickets have sold at a brisk pace, and we thought that the weeks leading up to the drawing would bring a further surge in sales, we have experienced a dramatic slowdown in the number of tickets no doubt due to the country’s severe economic downturn. We can see the "writing on the wall" and do not want to make any additional sales if the overall effort would not be in the best interest of OPEN.
The Board of Directors met this past weekend and authorized this action. As trustees of a nonprofit organization, the board is responsible for discharging its duties in a manner it reasonably believes to be in the best interests of the corporation, and with the care a prudent person would exercise. We take this responsibility seriously, and thus have made this difficult decision. We know that it will be disappointing to some.
Ticket refunds will begin immediately and ticket holders will receive refund checks in the mail within the next two weeks.
We have had a wonderful time selling the tickets, introducing the work of OPEN to a larger audience and sharing in people's excitement over such an innovative fundraiser. We sincerely thank our fundraiser co-chairs, Meryl Levine and Lisa Marie Murray, and our ticket purchasers for their outstanding support for this fundraising endeavor, and truly wish the outcome had been different.
